Department of Fine Arts, founded in1974 as the Department of Painting and Handcrafts, wasrenamed as the Department of Fine Arts in 1949 and changed to the present name in 1981. The Graduate Institute was established in 1981.Both the Department and the Graduate Institute offer courses in Chinese painting, Western painting, and art theories and criticism.

As the oldest academic institution of art, the Department has long been a leading center for art education in Taiwan, aiming at training students to be capable high school teachers and encouraging active learning and artistic creation and academic studies as well. In addition to numerous high school teachers, many graduates of the Department have becomeoutstandingartists, art critics, arthistorians, and curators of art museums. Many professors teaching atcolleges,graduateschools and universities in Taiwan are from our department.

The building that houses the department is an independent 6-floor building located at the intersection of Hoping East Road and Shih Ta Road, which is one of the busiest parts of downtown Taipei. Traffic is convenient here, and the building itself becomes an important landmark. It contains special-design classrooms for Chinese painting, Western painting, design courses, lectures, printmaking, photography, computers, ceramics, sculpture, multimedia as well as offices for professors. Also it is home to shih Ta Gallery whereexhibitions of works of renowned artists are held on a regular basis and to a department ˇVowned library that contains rich resources and collections.

 

There are 81 teachers in our department, including 25 full-time faculty members and 56 adjunct ones (Extended Education Division included), among whom 25 are holders of Ph.D. Degree and 41 of Master Degree.
